Pink Sou’westers are a group of LGBT people who offer affordable, accessible and inclusive events for all ages and for people from all over the Midlands. Like many other groups in Birmingham, Pink Sou’westers have benefitted from funding provided by the Ageing Better in Birmingham programme.
Their latest outing was to the Church of the Holy Prince Lazar, in Bournville, a stunning Serbian Orthodox church that was built by political refugees from Yugoslavia on land purchased from the Cadbury family in 1968.
As we listened to the interesting talk about the church and how all the elaborate wall paintings and murals were completed by just one man over a period of 7 years, it was clear that these sort of outings are really enjoyable for all members.
Bob, 71, from Hockley explains how Pink Sou’westers offers a variety of trips and visits, typically every month. He said, “They always try to make the trips as accessible as possible to all those who wish to join, not just in terms of location, but also making sure they are affordable.”
Bob added “Before joining this group, I looked around for a while but I was impressed by the Sou'westers as the group is so diverse, their friendliness and the great range of activities."
Julian, 61 from Wolverhampton, retired from his job as an engineer in the motor industry, two and a half years ago. He said that coming to the group gives him "a chance to socialise more, rather than spending time sitting at home."
“I think that the really good thing about this group is that there aren’t many gay groups where men and women socialise like this. At least half of the Sou’westers are women, and I think it is really good for us to mix”.
"Pink Sou’westers has been going for ten years", says Lesley, one of the group organisers. To celebrate, members are ramping up their annual quiz and inviting everyone to come along and celebrate with them! The celebratory Queer Quiz is FREE to attend and takes place on Wednesday 6th February at the Penthouse Suite, on Bromsgrove Street in Birmingham.
