Baughan House movers and shakers build great connections in the Tyburn community
One of the groups funded by Ageing Better in Birmingham is a sitting exercise group which takes place at Baughan House, a sheltered accommodation complex in Pype Hayes, north Birmingham.
The class has been going for the past 5 months and is run by Janine Smith, from Positive Movers, an ex-police officer who really keeps the group members on their toes as she encourages them to join in with lots of different types of sitting exercise, from scarf waving and playing maracas, to having fun with hoops!
“Sometimes, coming to a group like this is the only contact older people have with others in their neighbourhood” said Laura Grigg, Network Enabler from the Ageing Better Tyburn Hub.
“Coming along every week means that people inevitably have a chance to make friends – whereas before, they were just strangers”
The classes are open to all who wish to attend and attract people who live in the flats at Baughan House, as well as people who live in the local area. For example, there are three regulars who live in sheltered accommodation in nearby Boldmere and who come to Baughan Hopuse as there is nothing like this going on where they live.
Yvonne Smith, 91, from Erdington has been coming to this class since it started. She found out about the class from a leaflet that dropped through her door, and thought “that’s just what I want!"
Speaking about coming along to the class, Yvonne said that she has always kept her mind active, doing codebreakers, jigsaw puzzles etc, only recently giving up driving, despite having had a heart bypass in 2005.
“It helps me to feel more enthusiastic about life, it has lifted my spirits", Yvonne said.
It's with the help of people like Janine and the members who come along, that members of the local community in Tyburn can come together. The sitting exercise class is at Baughan House, Sorrel Grove, Pype Hayes B24 ORP. Exercises start at 1:30 and finish at 2:30 – All are welcome
